MPG and Fuel Efficiency Advice
Launched in 2018, the third generation Touareg underwent a facelift in 2023. With the help of its luxurious interior and high levels of refinement, it effectively bridges the gap between luxury and usability.
With a mileage per pound (mpp) of between 3.5 and 4.5, all are expensive to fuel. Regardless of power output, the 3.0-litre diesel V6 is said to offer the best combined economy of all regular ICE engines, delivering a claimed 33.4 mpg and 215g/km of CO2. This translates to a high BIK tax for business users and a fairly substantial first-year VED car tax for private owners.
Every car has an eight-speed automatic gearbox with an Eco mode that significantly reduces fuel consumption when driven gently. Overall though, this engine packs a lot of power without straining too much, so you won't have to smile a lot to get good gas mileage out of it.
Volkswagen Touareg Fuel Consumption
As one might expect, the petrol V6 performs worse here, achieving 25.7 mpg and 251 g/km of CO2. Although it is the faster car overall, it feels less adaptable on the road and is less suitable for towing because it lacks the torque of either diesel. Put differently, you need to put in more effort, which will impact the economy.
The best on-paper efficiency is provided by PHEVs, with the eHybrid getting 128.4 mpg and the R getting 122.8 mpg. However, the EV range is only 31 miles, and both have CO2 emissions of more than 50g/km. For company car tax, this puts it among the more expensive plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The Touareg R never even approached the stated fuel economy ratings in testing, but over the course of a week of driving that included trips on motorways, A-roads, and through cities, it averaged 32.0 mpg and reached a peak of 39.5 mpg on a moderate long-distance run. That is extremely competitive when compared to the 34.5 mpg highway economy we were able to achieve with the more powerful 3.0-litre TDI diesel we drove.
