Families who require the practicality of a Volkswagen Passat but find its tedium design unappealing can opt for the Volkswagen Arteon.
The stylish Peugeot 508, the Audi A5 Sportback, and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe are competitors for your money. These are five-door fastbacks, like the Arteon, but you may also want to think about more conventional saloons, like the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Jaguar XE.
The Arteon's stated CO2 and fuel economy are competitive for the size of the vehicle, and crucially, in our experience, its official combined WLTP consumption numbers are comparable to actual driving conditions. The eHybrid model is an exception. Like most plug-ins, its official MPG rating of 245.8 mpg is largely fictitious. However, you'll reach three figures if you charge consistently.
Volkswagen Arteon Fuel Consumption
On the other hand, we got 89 mpg on a 54-mile drive from London to Oxford, which is pretty good considering that we travelled most of the way at motorway speeds and that we had half of the battery remaining for the trip back.
On paper, the best mpg performers if you don't want to deal with charging are the diesel vehicles. Despite the fact that petrol vehicles perform the worst statistically, the R Line 2.0 TSI achieved an astounding 44.9 mpg on average during a week of testing that mostly consisted of driving on motorways and A-roads.
The fuel consumption of the Volkswagen Arteon is shown below in both MPG (Miles Per Gallon) and km/L (Kilometers Per Litre). Both of these figures show you how far that particular Volkswagen Arteon variant can travel for every gallon (4.55 litres) and every litre (1000ml) of fuel. The higher the MPG or km/L value, the more economical the car is and the cheaper it will be to run. As well as providing the combined figures, we also give you the fuel consumption you can expect from a Volkswagen Arteon in urban / city driving conditions as well as what can be expected on the open highway / motorway.

The 'real fuel consumption' shows you the amount of fuel your Volkswagen Arteon is consuming to travel a fixed distance. This is normally shown as L/100km. This figure shows you the amount of fuel consumed in litres for every 100kms travelled. This is the most commonly used figure for showing the fuel consumption of a vehicle. The formula to calculate it is:
(Litres of fuel used X 100) / Kilometers travelled = L/km.
