A large portion of car buyers now prefer family SUVs, and the Vauxhall Grandland has proven to be a well-liked option. Comfort and value are the package's key selling points, and they make it a great choice for many consumers.
Over the years, we have driven numerous variations of the Grandland. It was first introduced as the Grandland X in 2017; in 2022, it underwent a facelift with updated interior technology and Vauxhall's iconic "vizor" blacked-out front grille. Moreover, the "X" tag was removed.
A manual petrol Vauxhall Grandland can get about 45 mpg on the highway, but an automatic gearbox reduces that to a few miles per gallon. These are the WLTP figures. However, in our experience, the low to mid-30s is a more likely range, which is unfortunate for this type of vehicle.
Vauxhall Grandland Fuel Consumption
Significantly more efficient is the Grandland Hybrid. On the WLTP cycle, economy of about 50 mpg is achievable, and we discovered that it can easily surpass 40 mpg no matter how you drive it. The plug-in hybrid's multi-hundred MPG in lab testing is only theoretical; in real life, the vehicle's 20–30 mile electric range—as opposed to WLTP estimates that, depending on the model, range from the high 30s to low 40s—is more significant.
The diesel boasts the highest real-world MPG ratings, with over 50 mpg on the WLTP cycle. Realistic estimates of 45 mpg are reasonable and comparable to those of competing diesel mid-size SUVs.
The Vauxhall Grandland GSe isn't your average plug-in hybrid SUV, if the brochure is any indication. The Grand Sport electric (GSe) badge and its meaning provide the clue. Anything with that on the back will be powered entirely or partially by electricity, unlike previous performance Vauxhalls.
Charging & Driving Range
The Grandland GSe placed in a lower company car tax bracket than the Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid after achieving a respectable 41 miles on electricity in official tests. In the same BIK band, but with a marginally longer range, is the Kia Sportage PHEV.
The 14.2kWh battery pack requires five hours and 45 minutes to fully charge with a three-pin plug, and four hours to fully charge with the standard 3.7kW onboard charger that uses a Type-2 cable. With an optional 7.4kW charger that uses the Type-2 once more, this can be reduced to two hours on a wallbox that can support it. Rapid charging is not possible.
The fuel consumption of the Vauxhall Grandland is shown below in both MPG (Miles Per Gallon) and km/L (Kilometers Per Litre). Both of these figures show you how far that particular Vauxhall Grandland variant can travel for every gallon (4.55 litres) and every litre (1000ml) of fuel. The higher the MPG or km/L value, the more economical the car is and the cheaper it will be to run. As well as providing the combined figures, we also give you the fuel consumption you can expect from a Vauxhall Grandland in urban / city driving conditions as well as what can be expected on the open highway / motorway.

The 'real fuel consumption' shows you the amount of fuel your Vauxhall Grandland is consuming to travel a fixed distance. This is normally shown as L/100km. This figure shows you the amount of fuel consumed in litres for every 100kms travelled. This is the most commonly used figure for showing the fuel consumption of a vehicle. The formula to calculate it is:
(Litres of fuel used X 100) / Kilometers travelled = L/km.
