MPG and Fuel Efficiency Advice
A significant portion of car buyers now prefer family SUVs, and the Opel Grandland is one of these vehicles. It's a strong all-around package that emphasises value and comfort, two factors that many customers find decisive.
Over the years, we have driven a lot of different Grandland models. After being introduced as the Grandland X in 2017, it underwent a facelift in 2022, which included new interior technology and Opel's recognisable "vizor" blacked-out front grille. Additionally, the "X" tag was removed.
A Opel Grandland with a manual gearbox and petrol can get about 45 mpg on the WLTP, but an automatic gearbox reduces that to a few miles per gallon. It's not ideal for this kind of car, but in our experience, the low to mid-30s is a more realistic range.
It is far more efficient to use the Grandland Hybrid. We found that it can easily surpass 40 mpg no matter how you drive it, and that on the WLTP cycle, economy of about 50 mpg is achievable. The plug-in hybrid's multiple-hundred MPG in lab testing is only theoretical; in real life, it's more important to consider the vehicle's 20–30 mile electric range, which compares to WLTP estimates of the upper 30s to lower 40s, depending on the model.
Opel Grandland Fuel Consumption
With over 50 mpg on the WLTP cycle, the diesel has the highest real-world MPG ratings. In practice, expect about 45 mpg, which is comparable to other diesel mid-size SUVs.
Presuming the brochure is accurate, the Opel Grandland GSe is not your average plug-in hybrid SUV. Grand Sport electric, the meaning of the GSe badge, provides the hint. Things with that on the back will run entirely or partially on electricity, unlike previous Opel performance models.
Range & Charging
With a respectable 41 miles of electric range in official testing, the Grandland GSe falls into a lower company car tax bracket than the Volkswagen Tiguan eHybrid. Slightly more fuel efficient and operating in the same BIK band is a Kia Sportage PHEV.
Using a three-pin plug, the 14.2kWh battery pack takes five hours and 45 minutes to charge; using a Type-2 cable and the standard 3.7kW onboard charger, the same amount of time is needed. Using the Type-2 once more, an optional 7.4kW charger reduces this to two hours on a wallbox that can support it. There's no quick charge option.
The fuel consumption of the Opel Grandland is shown below in both MPG (Miles Per Gallon) and km/L (Kilometers Per Litre). Both of these figures show you how far that particular Opel Grandland variant can travel for every gallon (4.55 litres) and every litre (1000ml) of fuel. The higher the MPG or km/L value, the more economical the car is and the cheaper it will be to run. As well as providing the combined figures, we also give you the fuel consumption you can expect from a Opel Grandland in urban / city driving conditions as well as what can be expected on the open highway / motorway.

The 'real fuel consumption' shows you the amount of fuel your Opel Grandland is consuming to travel a fixed distance. This is normally shown as L/100km. This figure shows you the amount of fuel consumed in litres for every 100kms travelled. This is the most commonly used figure for showing the fuel consumption of a vehicle. The formula to calculate it is:
