Mazda's focus on weight reduction has improved not only performance and handling, but also fuel efficiency.

Naturally, some of this is due to the introduction of a 1.5-litre engine, the smallest yet in an MX-5 and a result of the lightweight body, which provides less mass for a smaller engine to push along. The end result is a combined economy of 47.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 139g/km, with the latter resulting in a £200 first-year VED payment and an additional £140 per year thereafter.

A few years ago, evo had the opportunity to drive 800 miles around Iceland's ring road in a 1.5. While hills and more twisting sections reduced the car's efficiency, its touring economy remained very impressive.
