MPG and Fuel Efficiency Advice
The market for large SUVs has been dominated by the Land Rover Defender 90 and its larger sibling, the Defender 110. They are well-liked and incredibly capable, both on and off the road, despite their high price and extensive range of options. Any version you choose will result in an award-winning product. For the second consecutive year, the Defender has been named the 2023 Parkers New Car Awards' Best Off-Roader.
Given that the lightest Defender 90 weighs a whopping 2,140 kg, it should come as no surprise that all of them have a penchant for guzzling petrol.
Land Rover Defender Fuel Consumption
In contrast to the 110 range, which includes the plug-in hybrid P400e, the Defender 90 lineup consists of diesels and petrol engines. The most powerful P400 version of the latter, as well as the six-cylinder diesels, do, however, have mild hybrid technology, which reduces emissions and saves fuel.
Although the diesels are fantastic at cruising, the sheer air resistance of the Defender's blocky body means that motorways aren't as efficient as you might imagine. If you're lucky, you might be able to get about 30 mpg from them if you drive them carefully. During our testing, which was conducted mostly on the highway, the D250 showed 29.3 mpg. When we tested it in the bigger 110, the older D240 engine performed a little better, achieving 30.1 mpg on longer trips and dropping to the high 20s in stop-start traffic in town.
Anticipate about 20 mpg for the P400 petrol and about 15 mpg for the V8 petrol. Even the thirstiest versions have a practical enough range between fill-ups because the fuel tank is at least a sizable 85 litres.
If you go with any of the diesel-powered models, the official average economy is about 33 mpg. However, at more than 220 g/km, CO2 emissions are comparatively significant.
Land Rover Fuel Consumption
On the WLTP test cycle, the P425 petrol in the 90 bodystyle only achieves 20.2 mpg combined and emits 316 g/km of pollutants. With CO2 emissions of 62g/km, the 110 body type plug-in hybrid P300e can deliver 103.8 mpg.
It should come as no surprise that the Defender's least efficient models are the P500 and P525 V8 petrol engines, which can only get an average of about 20 mpg under mixed driving circumstances. CO2 emissions can also average 329 g/km.
The fuel consumption of the Land Rover Defender is shown below in both MPG (Miles Per Gallon) and km/L (Kilometers Per Litre). Both of these figures show you how far that particular Land Rover Defender variant can travel for every gallon (4.55 litres) and every litre (1000ml) of fuel. The higher the MPG or km/L value, the more economical the car is and the cheaper it will be to run.
