MPG and Fuel Efficiency Advice
We are now in the fourth generation of the Jeep Cherokee, and it is unquestionably the most distinctive looking version yet.
This is Jeep's mid-size vehicle, not the larger Grand Cherokee. It succeeds the Compass and is focused squarely at European shoppers, unlike previous Jeep models.
In terms of fuel economy, the Jeep Cherokee's lowest running expenses are for the lower-powered 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel, which averages a reported 53.3mpg in front-wheel drive. The same engine powers four-wheel-drive vehicles, which get 50.4mpg.
Jeep Cherokee Fuel Consumption
Four-wheel drive Cherokees equipped with the more powerful 168bhp version of the same engine average 48.7mpg.
The picture is less rosy for the 3.2-litre petrol Trailhawk, which claims a frightening 28.2mpg on average.
The 138bhp diesel has the lowest CO2 emissions of any Jeep Cherokee model, emitting 139g/km in two-wheel-drive form. That just could be enough to pique the interest of company car purchasers looking for something unique.
In four-wheel-drive cars, adding another pair of wheels increases emissions to 147g/km.
The 168bhp Cherokee 4x4 diesel emits 154g/km, while the 3.2-litre petrol emits 232g/km.
It's too early to make any definitive predictions regarding Jeep Cherokee reliability, but the diesel engines are well-established Fiat units, and Jeep reliability is normally good.
The previous 170PS 2.0-litre Multijet turbodiesel engine claimed a combined fuel economy of 48.7mpg.
According to our Real MPG data, it returns a realistic 36mpg, whilst the 140PS unit returns 46.6mpg in real-world use, rather than the promised 50.4mpg.
Jeep Cherokee Fuel Consumption
The 2.2 turbodiesels are roughly comparable in terms of economy, but we'd steer clear of the 3.2 V6 engine in the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk due to its claimed 29.4mpg and 223g/km carbon dioxide emissions, even if you choose one that qualifies for the flat rate of £180 for road tax for cars registered after April 1, 2017.
For the rest of the lineup, road tax will cost between £200 and £240 for vehicles registered before the aforesaid date.
