While other vehicles allow for customisation, the Hyundai Ioniq offers three different powerplant options. It comes in three different models: plug-in, hybrid, and fully electric (which we've discussed in a different review here). It means that depending on your living condition and budget, you can choose from three cutting-edge, environmentally efficient powertrains.
The Kia Niro, which has the same hybrid, plug-in, or electric powertrain systems but a smaller SUV body, is the only other true competitor of the Ioniq. In addition to the Ioniq, you may want to look at family hatchbacks like the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, or Skoda Octavia (which comes in plug-in and hybrid versions). You may also want to look at all-electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf or VW ID.3.
Your particular circumstances should determine whether you choose the Ioniq Plug-in or Hybrid. Regarding operating expenses, both have benefits, but it's crucial to resist being duped by the reported figures. The Plug-in appears to be a no-brainer on paper. It promises CO2 emissions of 26g/km and up to 256.8mpg. But, given the nature of the testing process, you might observe much less or much more. It simply depends on how you drive.
Hyundai IONIQ Fuel Consumption
The Plug-in Hybrid can travel little less than 40 miles on pure electricity. You won't have to worry about the petrol engine if all of your trips are shorter than this, which should allow you to get infinite mpg. However, lengthier trips will result in a lower mpg number. This is because the Ioniq Plug-In simply turns into a gasoline-powered vehicle with a bulky battery pack and motor once the battery runs out. Thus, it won't be very effective for lengthy trips or daily use without a plug. According to Hyundai, it takes slightly more than two hours to charge to 80%. Although it should take about six hours, charging via a three-pin socket is only advised in an emergency.
If you can’t plug in, then the Hybrid is a good compromise. With a smaller, and therefore lighter battery, it will provide similar fuel economy regardless of whether you’re undertaking a long journey or a short hop through town. It has fuel economy of up to 62.8mpg, which is a little down on the 68.3mpg you’ll see from the most efficient Toyota Prius. CO2 emissions are pegged at a low 85g/km.
The fuel consumption of the Hyundai IONIQ is shown below in both MPG (Miles Per Gallon) and km/L (Kilometers Per Litre). Both of these figures show you how far that particular Hyundai IONIQ variant can travel for every gallon (4.55 litres) and every litre (1000ml) of fuel. The higher the MPG or km/L value, the more economical the car is and the cheaper it will be to run. As well as providing the combined figures, we also give you the fuel consumption you can expect from a Hyundai IONIQ in urban / city driving conditions as well as what can be expected on the open highway / motorway.

The 'real fuel consumption' shows you the amount of fuel your Hyundai IONIQ is consuming to travel a fixed distance. This is normally shown as L/100km. This figure shows you the amount of fuel consumed in litres for every 100kms travelled. This is the most commonly used figure for showing the fuel consumption of a vehicle. The formula to calculate it is:
(Litres of fuel used X 100) / Kilometers travelled = L/km.
