The fuel consumption of the Honda HR-V is shown below in both MPG (Miles Per Gallon) and km/L (Kilometers Per Litre). The Honda HR-V is really good

I was recently impressed by the Honda HR-V's long-distance fuel efficiency. I'm now committed to testing its environmental credentials to the utmost. Since filling up the 40-litre tank last time, I've permanently switched to eco-mode to see how many more miles I can get out of the vehicle, as Honda claims WLTP combined economy of 52.3 mpg, a respectable figure. After more than fifty miles on the tank, numerous trips to the airport, a trip through the countryside, and numerous eight-mile, one-hour commutes to and from the office (oh, the joys of London), things are starting to look up. In actuality, I've averaged a commendable 58.3 mpg, far exceeding Honda's stated economy. At one point, I even saw it tip over 62.

What now? I hear you utter. We are accustomed to interpreting the WLTP data cautiously, though. My previous long-term vehicle was a Peugeot 508 PSE plug-in hybrid, which was advertised as getting 139 mpg on the WLTP combined cycle. However, in practice, I could barely achieve 50 mpg on a moderately lengthy drive with a fully charged battery. In fact, I would typically average about 35 mpg because charging at home wasn't always practical for me. Holy crap. This is not a problem for the self-charging hybrid HR-V, and with fuel prices on the rise, it becomes a compelling option. particularly if you're not quite ready to switch to an entirely electric or plug-in car.

It hasn't been easy to chase those high MPG numbers, as you might expect. It is necessary to use the throttle more moderately, which is honestly not a problem considering that the 0–60 mph time is an appalling 10.3 seconds. Making the most of the regenerative braking system, however, is more crucial. When the regen is set to its highest setting, driving practically becomes one-pedal operation. Driving around town, you can easily see over 60 mpg once you get used to it.

At higher speeds, the MPG declines rather predictably. Nevertheless, if I drive slowly and steadily, I can still get 500+ miles on a single tank, and that has me thinking. How far do I have to go to get 70 mpg—should I take the back seats out? Take out the AC and infotainment? Though I doubt Honda would be too happy about it.
